Idea Execution

I’ve been reading and thinking a lot about idea creation vs. idea execution. It seems that more thought and energy are given, at least by senior management, to idea creation.
And why is that? Is it because idea creation is more fun? Or is it that they think the idea creation is the more challenging part and that execution can be left to almost anyone to handle?
Personally, I think it’s the idea execution and implementation that makes companies stand apart. This is where the blood, sweat, and tears kick-in and leads to the implementation of something truly special. I firmly believe this. And I’m not alone in this. In his book, Making Ideas Happen, Scott Belsky succinctly sums it up with a great quote from IDEO’s Sam Truslow: “When people want new ideas, what they are really saying is that they can’t execute.” Amen!
